Attention teachers: | ||||||
|
Your students can experience a unique introduction to technical careers. We invite you and your school to participate in a national outreach program called Discover E (E stands for Engineering). During Discover E 2008, thousands of engineers throughout the United States will speak to millions of students and teachers. Discover E will increase students appreciation and understanding of the engineering profession and foster student interest in applied mathematics, the engineering sciences, and technology, while also stressing the importance of mathematics and science education to any career in our increasingly complex world. The Discover E program enjoys continuing endorsement from a large number of organizations. For example, see the National Engineers Week website for a list of sponsors. During February and March of 2008, as an adjunct to National Engineers Week, engineers from local corporations will begin visiting classrooms to share the excitement and rewards of being an engineer. Engineers can also visit classrooms after March. The engineers will discuss careers in engineering with the students and can show video tapes, as well as involve students in hands-on activities. Following this, there can be question-and-answer periods. Engineers will be glad to tailor their presentations to particular teachers needs and can bring posters, bookmarks, and brochures to hand out to promote Discover E. The San Francisco Bay Area effort in 2008 is being chaired by David Levinson of Lockheed Martin Space Systems. Teacher requests will be processed during the month of February. Engineers will contact teachers after that time. Please be aware that teacher requests often outnumber the engineers who are able to visit classrooms. Every effort will be made to honor all Discover E Classroom Request forms received by January 31, 2008. Requests received after that date will be wait-listed. Unfortunately, engineers are not available for classroom visits prior to February 2008. Teachers must complete a separate form for each class an engineer is requested to visit. (Middle school and high school teachers must complete a separate form for EACH class period. Multiple requests received on one form cannot be honored.) All completed forms should be mailed or emailed to:
Please help us by spreading the word to all interested teachers. Sincerely, |
