Minutes of SVEC Council Meeting, April 25, 2001

Cliff Monroe called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM, as Dave Licata is absent.

Steve Sherman identified the nomination and election process. He is putting together a nomination pachage for next month. The actual election is during the June council meeting. Nominations close at the end of the May coucil meeting. To date, the following nominations have been received:

Ed Kaminski, to continue as Treasurer
Felicita Saiez, to represent SWE, but not as Director
Cliff Monroe, as Chair
Larry Bethel, as Vice Chair
Rendee Dore wouldn't declare her intentions to run for office.

There was significant discussion about the President/Chair position. Some of the criteria that might be appropriate are that the nominee should:

* Be an engineer
* PE/PhD is not required
* Should have been a Chair of a Member Society
* Should have connections with other Director levels in Societies, Universities or Industry.
* Name recognition has it's advantages
* An unyielding perseverence to getting in to places and seeing people is crucial.

Steve Sherman has declined to serve as an Officer, but has graciously offered to head the Banquet Committee next year. He is especially interested because next year will mark the sesquacentennial anniversary of the ASCE. [thanks for giving me an opportunity to use that word - Larry]

A meeting with the Advisory Committee is scheduled for May 3. This would include Sam Haddad, Jay Pinson and Nabil Ibrahim. A report from this meeting is expected at the May 23rd Council meeting.

Neither Nabil nor Sam were present to report on Fundraising Committee activities or the Advisory Committee.

We all offered personal reasons why we attend the SVEC. To capture them all is impossible, but here is a modest attempt at some of them.

* Increased visibility of own organization
* Learning how other organizations run
* To learn how to get people to volunteer
* Find out about the engineering profession and education process
* Raise visibility for engineering accomplishments
* Serve customers
* To be active in community
* To develop leadership skills
* To meet other groups

A variety of upcoming events were listed and discussed. Paper notices of some are attached. All emailed notices are sent along to Mike and posted on the SVEC web page, and also entered into the SVEC e-groups message list.

No formal motions were made.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 PM.
