President's Report

Dave outlined the overall goal of the SVEC; serving our member societies and individuals. This will be accomplished through

• an effective infrastructure,
• meetings that are interesting and relevent,
• collaboration between industry and education,
• web based communications,
• support of education and curriculum
• seminars
• the annual banquet.

Special Presentations

Metin Ozen presented an overview of Finite Element Analysis technology and it's relation to many of the newly developing businesses in the valley. Involvement in ASME recent Bay Area Technical Conference on Miniaturization Technolgies and MEMS club were highlighted.

Mary Clare Sprott described the Sunnyvale Center for Innovation, Invention and Ideas. This center for patents and trademarks is a unique local resource for protecting intellectual property. This library has existed in Sunnyvale for 25 years but is now threatened by funding cutbacks. Their range of services include education, patent and trademark searches, video conferencing with the PTO, and other services. See http://www.sci3.com for more information.

Minutes of SVEC Executive Board Meeting

The Executive Board meeting was called to order following the close of the open meeting. The motion to join the American Electronics Association was tabled to allow further time to consider the possible benefits of membership and to consider the appropriateness of membership relative to the SVEC charter.

The schedule for future Executive Board meetings was discussed. It was agreed that a time roughly between the council meetings would be best to allow any needed actions to be completed between board and membership meetings. To ensure the greatest participation of all elected directors and officers, it was agreed that the board would be polled by e-mail as to the 'best' schedule.
