Minutes of SVEC Council Meeting
Oct 25, 2001

Meeting start 7 pm

Introductions

Some questions about not everyone received meeting notice. Add future dates to meeting notices.

Proposed SVEC brochere handed out by Cliff Monroe. Some corrections and comments on the revised trifold brochere.

Mention of passing of Joe Cassisi, council donated $100 to Cassisi Education Fund.

Treasurers report given. We will be paying out rest of scholarships. Received $5000 from SEMI.

Business report on overhead.

Clill to go over new direction, will focus on leaders but will welcome rank and file.

Application form to be developed and added to the webpage.

Dave Levinson (on regards to multiple page document on Discover E) said all you have to is care to maintain and drive Discover E. He also said nobody can replace him, it's not skill, it's passion. Also the Internet replaced his manual and the 6 people he had helping him.

Rendee reviewed calendar.

Larry says joint meetings instead of meetings for meetings sake. Identify best practices and interesting meetings. So far, none identified.

Change dates for January or change location. Some suggest change location (not date).

Thalia Anagnos (civil enrg professor, SJSU, specializes in earthquakes):

Remote computer lab cannot be used by all disciplines. Project developed for large scale testing are expensive labs.

Shared-use facilities linked by the Internet.

Engineering workbench that's accessible by 2-way video conference.

You can perform settlements with a centrifuge in a few days instead of waiting 10 years.

How did it all happen? NSF has "major research initiatives" but none in civil engineering. Previous programs have been astronomy but the new guy suggested thinking out of the box. Do something instead of one million dollar projects.

  • community not cohesive (all want money for themselves)
  • ERI provided workshops and umbrella organization to get everyone together

N.C.S.A. developing the networking of the different sites. Should be done by 2004. CVREE will have to figure out how to operate this grid (Thalia is involved with).

Plan to meet on the network since it is difficult for in-person meetings.

How will they deal with paying employees on shared use.

In california, 1940 where they started bolting houses to foundations. 1971 had lot of changes in building codes because of LA earthquake. Kobe (Japan) had a lot of poorly maintained and built houses.

Models of corsortium: Advanced Natl Seismic Council

    Predictions are a dead issue:

  • Can't do it
  • Wouldn't be able to do anything (do they leave the community?)
  • A sociological nightmare

The issue is what can we do to mitigate the outcome:

  • What can be done to reduce damage
  • How can make a better shearwall

The corsortium has to be self-sufficient. Don't want to get into a situation is when the money goes away, the organization collapses.

    Scholarship Program

Seth and Cliff are working on an application. ASQ is their example. They want to start this early, members contact their alma mater, and scholarship chairs. Determine the qualifications. Probably will not have the same amount of scholarship.

It is for undergraduates to continue, and to stick with undergraduates (no grads).

There are groups that want to give away money and want to help us do it.

    Grant writing

Earliest date is Dec 1 and cost is $1200. Fel has a contact, planning an all day but probably go for Jan 12, Saturday. Backup date Jan 5 or Jan 26.

Grant writing charge students a certain amount i.e. $25 (limit attendance to 30). First person cheaper, next more expensive?

Larry: Treasurers workshop in March or April.

Question is what about a council meeting followed by a workshop.

    Banquet

  • Need to have people ready to ask for money
  • have artwork from ASCE
  • A meeting with Business Journal, Rendee will be there (most focus is on Nov. event)
  • Speaker is solid but plane ticket is dubious
  • Don't think it's time to organize a committee so people are not burned out by Feb.

Still the problem of getting people to signup early.

Should we have an honorary chairman?

    Open House

Use SEMI facilities, Rendee handed out a brochere, will have the AT Kearney study. 4:30 to 6:00 event for administrators to hear what's happening in education.

Save the date as a postcard.

Don't know the full cost of Open House.

    Meeting adjorned at 9:00 pm
