The September meeting of the Silicon Valley Engineering Council was held Wednesday, September 27, 2000. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM by Dave Licata, President.

Attendees

Attendance sheet unavailable at present time. (Did anyone pick it up?)

  1. Introduction by Dave Licata.
  2. Edwin El-Kareh (in his mad scientist persona) presented a demonstration of a Jacobs Ladder, and a laser optics kit. The optics kit was created with assistance from the IEEE LEOS (Laser and Electro Optics Society) for the purpose of demonstrating and educating students of all ages about laser optics. It is available from Laser LightLab, Inc., www.laserlightlab.com. Dr. Gareth Williams will be demonstrating the kit, as well as other magic, on October 24, 2000, from 8-10 PM at the National Semiconductor Meeting Hall, in back of the Credit Union. A no-host dinner at Sweet Tomatoes will precede the demonstration. For further information, Dr. Williams may be contacted at 408-924-5248 or 408-356-9106. Edwin also asked for assistance from the SVEC to help promote the use of this kit as a teaching tool for volunteers for Discover-E.
  3. Career Update. A suggestion of having a contract employment recruiter present to the Council was discussed and turned down. In the same discussion, a financial planner's presentation was also turned down, since both of these parties are primarily interested in selling their services rather than serving the goals of the SVEC.
  4. Banquet and San Jose Business Journal. Rendee requested that members provide leads for potential banquet sponsors as soon as possible. Additional meetings with the SJBJ has identified a source of In-Kind Sponsorship of the Banquet in the form of free advertising in exchange for exclusive advertising of all events.
  5. Report/discussion by Felicita Saiez on a project through Fund Development. Felicita identified the following project ideas which were proposed during the May 24, 2000 meeting of SVEC.

In response to this list, Dave Levinson made a motion, which was amended to read "that SVEC establish an award for teacher recognition annually to one teacher in recognition of maintaining high standards of math and science curriculum content". The motion was passed unanimously, with Dave Levinson volunteering to chair the subcommittee to develop this award.

Bob Goslow also indicated his interest in the math/science quiz program. His wife is involved with the "Math Counts" program which conducts local and national competitions of 7th and 8th graders. The competitions cost about $1000-$1200 to put on and need a number of volunteers to help with running the program. He made a motion "that SVEC sponsor or assist in sponsoring the "Math Counts" program in February, 2001, in the San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties." The motion was passed unanimously. Bob was invited to further discuss and present to the Board at the next Board meeting October 9, 2000.

  1. Other Directors reports. Jason reported that a new mailing list (V1.5) was generated, and that a variety of new information is posted on the SVEC web site.
  2. Delegates reports. A number of delegates identified upcoming events, most of which are described on their societies web sites. In particular, Maneesh mentioned a golf tournament October 25. Felicita Saiez, SWE, identified the next monthly meeting of SWE as an honors presentation meeting, with the local section winning an award and the Stanford student section winning a national award.
  3. Secretary's Report. None given.
  4. Treasurer's Report. Addresses needed for mailing some of the SVEC membership billings.
  5. Conclusion. The meeting was adjourned at 8:56 PM.
