We show the current state of the art with an overview of available camera models, tools and platforms. We discuss the challenges in the current state to a road to mainstream consumption of immersive media. This includes technical issues, but also social aspects. We present our latest published research on mitigation strategies regarding phobias during consuming immersive media. Furthermore, we have a short outlook to what comes next, giving a quick overview of depth map-enhanced immersive media, 6-DoF content and AI-generated 3D scenes.
