Dr. Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli

Professor of Electrical engineering and Computer Science (EECS), UC Berkeley

For transformative contributions to Electronic Design Automation (EDA) and development of design methodologies for modern Integrated Circuits (ICs) and Cyber Physical Systems.

Dr. Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli’s illustrious career spans the realm of complex system design, from integrated circuits to healthcare systems. His contributions in modeling, formal verification, synthesis, and methodology have been pivotal in transforming chip design from a handcrafted process to an automated industry powering today’s electronic devices. He is recognized as one of the founding fathers of EDA and a leader in the field of Cyber Physical Systems design methodology and tools.

Prof. Sangiovanni-Vincentelli has been on the Faculty of the EECS Department, UC Berkeley since 1976. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Lester Center for Innovation of the Berkeley Haas School of Business and of the Berkeley Center for Western European Studies, and is a member of the Berkeley Roundtable of the International Economy. Since July 2019, he has served as Special Advisor to the Dean of Engineering of the University of California, Berkeley, for Entrepreneurship and as Chair of the Academic Advisors of the Berkeley SkyDeck accelerator. He is Honorary Professor at Politecnico di Torino.

Co-founder of Cadence Design Systems and Synopsys, Dr. Sangiovanni-Vincentelli is a respected figure in both academia and industry. His recognition includes the IEEE/RSE James Clerk Maxwell Medal and the BBVA Frontiers of Knowledge Award. An IEEE and ACM Fellow, he is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
